Barcelona ‘unable to register’ Dani Olmo for the new season as major problem identified

Barcelona are not currently able to register Dani Olmo to play in La Liga despite signing him last week.

On Friday (August 9), Barcelona announced they had secured Spanish playmaker Dani Olmo from RB Leipzig for £51 million.

The 26-year-old, who impressed at Euro 2024 with three goals and two assists, has agreed to a six-year deal at Camp Nou, which features a £429 million release clause.

However, it seems improbable that the Masia academy graduate will be able to feature in Barcelona’s La Liga opener against Valencia on Friday.

This is because, according to Cadena Ser, Barcelona currently cannot afford to register Olmo for La Liga. Although Spanish clubs can spend freely on transfers, La Liga enforces strict financial rules for player registration.

Each club is given a salary cap each season, determined by its revenue. Once this cap is reached, the online registration system prevents the addition of new players until there is enough room in the wage budget.

According to Ser, Barcelona is currently in a position where they must sell players to make space for new signings, including Olmo.

As it stands, several other players, including Inigo Martinez and Vitor Roque, will also not be registered in time for the season opener on Friday.

The club’s financial troubles are well-known, and the situation may have been avoided if a proposed sale of a 25 percent stake in Barca Studios to the German company Libero had gone through. Although Libero initially agreed to the sale for €100 million, they later withdrew, and another company, Aramark, paid only €40 million, leaving €60 million unpaid.

However, reports suggest that even after receiving the full payment, Barcelona will still need to generate more funds than they are spending. Last summer, the club faced a similar challenge with Ilkay Gundogan but ultimately succeeded in registering the former Manchester City captain with La Liga.

Barcelona remains hopeful of signing Spanish winger Nico Williams from Athletic Club.
