Arne Slot leaves Liverpool star out of first matchday squad amid shock interest from Premier League rivals

Liverpool star Joe Gomez has been left out of the club’s squad for their season opener amid interest from multiple Premier League sides

The Reds begin the Arne Slot era with a Saturday lunchtime match against Ipswich Town at Portman Road, and there’s a significant change in the matchday squad.

Jarell Quansah has been chosen to partner Virgil van Dijk, pushing Ibrahima Konate to the bench.

However, there is no spot for Gomez on the bench as he did not travel to Ipswich. According to Paul Joyce of The Times, Gomez is “exploring his options” as the transfer window nears its end.

The England international is attracting interest from Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Fulham, and Chelsea, with foreign clubs also monitoring his situation.

Bayern Munich is a potential destination after selling Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui to Manchester United for a total of £60 million.

While a move for Gomez is possible, it’s important to note that the club is not forcing him to leave.

Gomez is contemplating whether moving for regular game time is in his best interest, with the club and player having “mature discussions” about his future.

Earlier in the transfer window, Newcastle and Liverpool considered a swap deal involving Gomez and Anthony Gordon. Newcastle valued Gomez at £45 million, and the deal was seen as a way to navigate Premier League financial regulations.

However, Newcastle chose to sell other players instead and have now prioritized Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi as a key target.

Gomez remains an attractive option for many clubs due to his high-level versatility across the backline.

However, Liverpool is not actively trying to offload their longest-serving player. If a transfer does not materialize, the club would be happy to reintegrate him into the team.
