Liverpool’s interest in Martin Zubimendi is thought to remain despite the Spanish international’s u-turn in negotiations this summer.
The Real Sociedad player chose to remain in San Sebastián, despite earlier signals suggesting he was interested in a move to Anfield.
David Ornstein reviewed Liverpool’s choice not to seek an alternative signing and speculated that Arne Slot’s team might reconsider this option later, similar to how they waited for Virgil van Dijk’s transfer in 2018.
Ornstein advised against making a hasty decision on an alternative that might not be ideal. Instead, he suggested sticking with current options until the right opportunity presents itself.
He further noted: “It could be that Zubimendi becomes a future target, much like Virgil van Dijk was after Liverpool missed out on him while he was at Southampton, and then signed him in January. Alternatively, it might be someone else or no one at all if Ryan Gravenberch excels in the role. We’ll have to wait and see.”
It’s hard to imagine a significant shift in the situation over the next few months.
San Sebastián’s excellent food and stunning sights will still be there when the winter transfer window opens. The only difference will be the remaining length of Zubimendi’s contract, which has two and a half years left.
This doesn’t entirely exclude the possibility of a change of heart from the 25-year-old, even if it seems unlikely.
In the meantime, we are thoroughly enjoying Ryan Gravenberch’s impressive performances as the deep-lying midfielder in Slot’s Liverpool lineup.
