Barcelona eyeing historic signing instead of Nico Williams

Barcelona is actively pursuing significant improvements in their squad during the current summer transfer window, aiming for a major deal that will have a considerable impact on the team for the new season.

It appears that Joan Laporta has abandoned hopes of signing Nico Williams, the promising Spanish winger from Athletic Bilbao, and is now exploring other options for potential signings this summer.

According to Spanish newspaper “Mundo Deportivo,” Barcelona is keenly interested in acquiring Portuguese star Rafael Leao from AC Milan. Barcelona’s efforts to sign Nico Williams failed after he expressed his desire to remain with Athletic Bilbao for at least another season.

The report suggests that Laporta is highly impressed with Leao’s talent and envisions him as a key part of a dynamic attacking trio alongside Lewandowski and Yamal. Leao’s current market value is approximately €90 million, a sum Barcelona could potentially afford using the funds initially set aside for Williams, plus proceeds from player sales.

Additionally, since Leao’s agent, Jorge Mendes, has a strong relationship with Laporta, there is a possibility that the transfer could be completed before the end of the window.

Rafael Leao’s contract with AC Milan is valid until the summer of 2028, and the Italian club is expected to be reluctant to let him go easily.
